The Psychotherapy Institute offers training experiences for practicum students at the doctoral level. We also offer employment opportunities for post-degree MFT interns and post-docs.

Our practicum students serve a diverse ethnic population with approximately 25% African American, 25% Hispanic, 10% bi-cultural, and 40% Caucasian. Our therapists have extensive experience working with culturally diverse populations, and all efforts are made to ensure that therapy is culturally sensitive and appropriate. Currently we are providing services to an equal number of males and females. Approximately 10% are adults, 50% children, 20% adolescents, and 20% families.

Services Provided:

Services provided include assessment and diagnosis, individual, family, and group therapy, case management and consultation, and psychological testing for children and adolescents. We also utilize the Adult Attachment Projective, and a Doll Play Attachment measure. We use the Personality Assessment Inventory, the Adolescent Psychopathology Scale, and the Behavioral Assessment System for Children for outcome-based measurement of treatment effectiveness.

Philosophy of Training: The primary training method is experiential and includes socialization into the profession of psychology. Training is augmented by mentoring, didactic exposure, role-modeling, observational/vicarious learning, use of the two-way mirror, and supervision and consultation. We are a small organization and practicum students receive a great deal of individual mentoring and support. We are committed to ensuring that intern or trainee’s service delivery tasks and duties are primarily learning oriented, and that training considerations take precedence.

Responsibilities

Practicum students are expected to evaluate, plan, and conduct the course of treatment for a caseload of 6-10 cases. Trainees will provide case management functions on an as-needed basis, and will be responsible for documenting their work in client charts as per the standards of the profession in order to ensure quality of therapy and appropriateness of treatment. Trainees will prepare process notes and will audio or videotape their sessions as requested by their supervisor. Trainees are required to attend and participate in all weekly trainings, seminars, case conferences, and meetings.
